And even when precipitation starts, some regions will remain drier than others. Forecasts for Colorado indicate rain will be scarce this month, and this week, parts of the state could see more drought than usual. That's the bad news. The good news is that there will be more of it next year. One of the things scientists monitor in the state is soil moisture, and the maps of what's in the ground today paint a clear picture of the region's drought. Some areas are the color of mud, while others are brown. Statewide, the average soil moisture is now just below 20 percent, and it's been like this for much of the year. A recent survey of soil moisture across the state indicates most of Boulder County has average soil moisture at just 23 percent. The good news is that rain is already falling in other parts of the state, including Larimer County. The bad news: The recent rain is being driven by the remnants of a powerful storm that dumped 20 inches of rain on Colorado in just the past four days. That's the highest four-day precipitation total in state history. "It is a pretty close call between the drought and the deluge," says meteorologist Matt Pitzarella with the National Weather Service in Grand Junction. So how can we expect the snowmelt that's key to getting the water flowing in the rivers and streams to start on time? Most importantly, it needs to start this week, when temperatures rise and the sun comes out for a couple of days.
